Well the new year is almost upon us, and as is usual this time each year we reflect on the year we are leaving behind and ponder on what the forthcoming year may bring.
2009 has been a fantastic year, with its down sides. There was lots of doom and gloom from the media with regards to the ‘credit crunch’ which of course brought along plenty of uncertainty, but thankfully, and I know that this is the same for pretty much most people in this industry, I’ve had a very productive and busy year with many exciting freelance and personal projects, some good exposure on active.tutsplus.com as well as some great reader stats on this blog, thanks to adobe feeds and of course some great feedback from you, the community….which brings me on to 2010……. The new year sees me starting a new job as a full time employee with a great communications company as their RIA developer. This of course means the end to any new freelance projects, so if you require me for any freelance work, please do not ask as I hate turning things down. But of course, the new year looks like it is bringing on some very exciting challenges which I am truly relishing getting my teeth into and certainly have great hopes for….. so here’s to 2010!!!

Well after trying to squeeze it in between other projects and work I have finally managed to complete my portfolio site. This is vital if I intend to pitch myself and my services to clients to try and ensure that I get future work. I still have a few things to add before I am 110% happy with it but it has everything that I want at the moment, so I thought as it is the parent site to this blog I thought I would share it with you. UltraVisual main site. I do intend to keep it as updated as possible so hopefully as I finish projects the site should continue to grow.

So……. What brought me here………?
With a background in design, mainly painting and airbrush, I have always through my life, even though I don’t work in that field, kept my creativity going by doing various projects for friends, colleagues etc. Well my wife discovered she was pregnant last year and so the room then used as my “studio” needed to be rearranged and turned into a nursery for our expectant son. So this brought in me a realisation that my creativity would have to change. I then turned to the computer for guidance and discovered so many free programs available to help nurture my creativity and keep me going. And so came a period of intense learning as I took on programs such as Blender 3D, the GIMP etc, helping teach me the basics of digital design, this in turn introduced me to web design and then flash! At first flash was just used as a tool to add interactivity to static web pages I created for myself, but as my skills grew and I started to produce websites for other people I wanted to add more sparkle to my creations and so took it upon myself to start learning Actionscript. This was nine months ago. I have since then read about 6 books on Action script, bought Flash CS3 and now Flash CS4, Flex builder 3.0 and also FDT 3, taken on various projects, some for money, some not and some for myself. I am no expert by any stretch of the imagination and still feel a complete novice as there seems to be so much still to learn, but hell I am having so much fun along the way, I am very proud of my creations and some over time, I am sure I will share with you. So that is what has brought me here. My intentions for the future are to learn as much about actionscript as I can and to see how far I can stretch it. Before 6 months ago I never saw my self programming and apart from my last years in school and the little amount of html and basic AS2 coding I have done in the last year, had never really done any and never really imagined myself doing any, but man now that I have got started I am loving it!!
